It’s one of those stories you’re bound to hear from someone you know, the I-locked-myself-out story. Well it happened to me a year ago, when I was sharing a two bedroom apartment with a roommate a few miles away from campus. Our room was located on the second floor, and we usually got in and out through the back entrance since our apartment was farther down the hallway. During this time, I was going through a heavy bout of insomnia and spent most of the late hours attempting to write or read. My roommate had a dog, a six-year-old beagle who suffered from incontinence and required multiple trips outside at odd hours of the day. It was three-in-the-morning when she came up to me, whining, pawing my leg for attention. Being the considerate gent that I am, I saved my story, grabbed a sweater, and her leash to take her on a quick walk around the neighborhood.
I didn’t realize that I’d left my keys in the room until she was done.
I had my phone on me, and called my roommate. He was in Nevada then, visiting his folks for the weekend. Given how late it was, I wasn’t entirely surprised that he didn’t pick up his phone. Next, I tried a close friend who occasionally pulled all-nighters to catch up with his school work.
